I believe that you have this the wrong way around. The originals were made
up of some sort of string impregnated with lead. As you say once used
by plumbers. The original shape was a circular cylinder shape with ends
shaped to fit into the beveled carburetor body on one side and a similar
shape to the clamping ring. The leaded string was then forced tight when
the plate was tightened.

'O' rings are supplied now but are not always a tight fit. Lead is not a
favored material these days
