[Healeys] Excessive oil coming out the clutch housing

We pulled the transmission in my BJ8 and removed the mounting plate from the
engine. The gasket was in place and not torn. After cleaning the surfaces, I
ran a small bead of Right Stuff Permatex sealer round the outline of the
gasket on the plate and then smooth the bead with a wooden coffee stirring,
laid down the gasket and ran my finger lightly pressing all around the
gasket. Then applied a bead of Right Stuff to the gasket and smooth the bead
all around the gasket.  Carefully attaching the mounting plate on the
engine, installing the screws, and pressing the plate to the block and
lightly tightening the screws for an over night setting.  Next day began
tighting the secrew, installing the flywheel and the starter.  After,
getting the starter electrical problems fixed, I turned the key and the
engine started.  

 

I kept watching the kitty litter under the engine plate for signs of oil
while watching the temperature of the engine go up and increasing the rpms.
Once the rpms got to 2,000 RPM, I just let it run while watch the oil
pressure and water temperature.  Approximately 10 minuets later increased
the rpms to 3000 RPMs for a few min as the water temperature was at 200
degrees, I turned off the engine.  Not a drop of oil was found.  3 hours
later performed the same test except raised to 3500 RPMs.  I will keep
running the engine regularly until we put the trans back in.

 

The job needs these newer gaskets making caulking as opposed to the old
Permatex products.  Maybe we do not need gaskets anymore with the Right
Stuff and other such fast cure products.  According to my brother, a
Cadillac specialist mechanic and other friends say the engines of today do
not use gaskets or very little us of gasket material.

 

After the trans I can concentrate on installing a new oil pump and other
things.
