Simon – I fully agree. I didn’t want to risk complicating your life by suggesting this earlier. Now that that has been done ---------!

My tri-carb – so close to yours in car number – has been weeping a bit of oil in sympathy with your overdrive ordeal. Mine got a BJ8 clutch 20 plus years ago – an excellent upgrade. Many others here have done the same upgrade and all would agree. Now – when you have the whole mess apart anyway – would be the time to do it. As John says, if you can’t find a BJ8 flywheel (a direct replacement), any competent automotive machine shop can modify your existing one (different mounting bolt size and circle, different locating dowel positions and number).

If you decide to do it, I’m sorry to add to your task.

Cheers anyway ---

I'll second what John says. I put a BJ8 clutch in my 100 and it is lighter and easier to engage than the spring clutch.

Simon, when doing the clutch replace everything with the BJ8 kit. This is a huge improvement over the earlier ones. You will have to get the flywheel re-drilled for the pressure plate but this could be done when having it re-surfaced John Rowe, Qld Australia

To, hopefully, bring you up to date and hopefully put this thing to bed……

I took the overdrive up to OD Spares and explained what was going on. They stripped it down and discovered:-

The pump plunger wouldn’t go all the way up because the casing was “b*gg***d. At some stage it had been scored and then repaired with something like JB Weld.

Plastic Padding or Plastic Metal are our equivalents. I suspect OD Spares had done it when they rebuilt the servo back in +/- ’04. They seemed very knowledgeable about the stuff, saying it “takes 24 hours to go off”. Plastic Metal goes off as soon as you turn your back on it. Anyhow, they put in a brand new front casing and a new clutch. Tested, the OD ran at 500psi++.

While they were doing that, 08:30 to 12:30, I was able to go to AH Spares and get a clutch kit and various other bits. First time there. Bit surprised by the member of staff who said “We’re not mechanics. We just sell this stuff”. So, the clutch will be the next discussion…..
