Another issue to consider if things are not quite right after assembling a pile of parts into a working gearbox, in this case the shifter. Make sure that nicely chrome plated shifter that you just found on eBay is the same as the one the one you removed or need for your gearbox. 
Little things are different even though they may look alike. 
Example: the small ball on the end of the stick is a different diameter on what appears to be a bunch of the same shifters. There are at least two different sizes. Couple that difference with the wrong bushing and things can get messy.
