G’day

As a matter of interest, the SUs fitted to our 1948 Healey Saloon are not fitted with rods at all.

The caps are made from black Bakelite and I use dashpot oil sold by SU.

On later SUs with plastic caps a carb backfire will send the rod up through the cap if too heavy an oil is used.

I checked two versions of the Healy Workshop Manual:

Issue 2 – 20W/20 or 20W/30

Issue 9 – 10W/30 or 10W/40

Both manuals have this statement “In no circumstances should a heavy-bodied lubricant be used”. The oil is to act as a damper and reduce the pistons in the carburetor from fluttering. Once the temperature gets above about 40 deg C the viscosity is very similar for all of the lubricants mentioned. Note 75W/90 gear oil is very close to 15W/40 motor oil. Straight 90 is probably not a good choice as it will be heavy-bodied at lower temperatures.

The manuals suggest the lightest oil that will control piston flutter is the right one.

We have used 20 / 50 straight from an oil can on the bench for 40 years and never had a problem.

I watched a recent John Twist YouTube video today on fitting H type SU carbs to a T type MG. In the video he says to use 90 wt gear oil in the dashpot. He also said the lighter oils and ATF that so many people recommend contribute to the early wear and tear on the carb. Anyone else using this weight oil in the carb? All my life I have been putting 20 wt oil in the dashpot.
