The high rpm of the actual motor in a reduction gear starter is reduced by gears to a lower rpm of the pinion which more or less corresponds to the original starter rpm.

The only advantage of a reduction gear starter is its lower power consumption but that is academic and only relevant if your electrics are not up to scratch due to lack of maintenance and that is surely not at hand?

The disadvantage is that it is more complicated and rather fragile as it is often made with cheap materials, and as Joseph states it enters the gear ring from the wrong side so ideally you would have to turn around the ring gear on the flywheel.
