[Healeys] air ducting kit

Gear reduction starters - embedded in this thread.
Could someone please enlighten me as to the benefits/reasons of using a
gear reduction starter that so many AH owners rave about ?
Surely a starter is digital - it either turns the engine over or it doesn't
?
Our standard starters are series dc motors that have increased torque (more
amps) whenever the motor starts to stall.
So lots of amps required and this is why battery terminal condition and
good grounds are so important.
So is the reduction starter a smaller, faster shunt motor with mechanical
gearing to increase the torque ?
Probably lighter too ?
Just wondering ....
