[Healeys] Heater cable replacement--BJ8

Cable broke at the sliding control switch--will need to replace whole thing.  anyone ever do this on a BJ8 and if so, any guidance?  Can it be done w/o removing the center section of dash? assume not since you have to get to the heater control valve:)Thankstom
