Peter,

I have not done any bank wire transfers to England but here is the
information your bank will need to initiate a wire transfer:

PRIMARY BANK INFORMATION

RECEIVING BANK INFORMATION

TAX ID

Could be optional

BANK NAME

ACCOUNT NUMBER

ACCOUNT TYPE

Could be optional

ADDRESS BANK

BRANCH NAME

CITY

COUNTRY

SWIFT CODE

Mandatory although your bank may have this.

DW should be able to provide all of the information in the receiving bank
column.

My bank charges a $20 fee and the wire goes through Mellon Bank back east
and they charge a $25 fee for a total of $45.

John

I am very surprised by this. There must be a reason why DW won't accept such
a large paymemt, perhaps the issue is with Visa.

Just to put things straight - well a bit :-) As someone in the UK who has
had to receive payments from US, the biggest problem has always been at the
US end. Many smaller US banks simply don't want/can't be bothered/don't know
how to deal with international inter-bank transfers.

It was usually a question of going back to the US bank with the correct
SWIFT/IBAN number and just telling them to get on with it! I had one client
who had to go to his bank four times before the bank finally go their act
together.

The bit about $-only is also untrue: I was being paid in Euro. If I want to
buy something or pay a bill in France (say) all I do is do make the transfer
on-line; or I call the bank in either case the transaction is completed,
generally within an hour certainly within a day.

Payment in GBP isn't really surprising, after all how many US suppliers
would want to accept GBP direct into their account? :-)

Paypal isn't that common here, I agree. Since HSBC is one of the largest
banks in the world I would be surprised if they can't accept it. It may be
that DW doesn't want to deal with it.

One of the issues with Paypal has been traceability and guarantees. From a
supplier's point of view bank-to-bank transfers offer traceability and since
they are (a) a guarantee by yours bank to the supplier's bank that you have
the wherewithall to pay; and (b) a guarantee by your bank that the transfer
will be made offer both you and (say) DW are much better for the supplier.
It has a final benefit, that of traceability: the supplier can see where the
payment is coming from and lets all sides deal with any issues.

Hope this is of some help,

Peter
