[Healeys] Differential vs BN2 OVERDRIVE

Quite correct Bob,
However I believe the premature failure of the laygear needle bearings is
caused by circulation of the microscopic chips of hardened steel that are
shed by the 1st, reverse and laygear when people grind them together.
To minimize this I always install a magnet on the gearbox drain plug to
supplement the overdrive one.
I have been restoring (replacing) the 1st gear section of MG "T" series
gearboxes for several years for which we have been using a tougher steel
alloy for the replacement 1st gear. To date have experienced no failures,
even in boxes that have been raced extensively.
I would presume that the people doing the Healey laygears are using
similar material.
