Also old Rileys.   From memory, the reflector is pivoted on either side and, when swivelled up, it dips the headlight beam down.  

But in Sarah’s photos it looks as though the bulb holder is the part that moves up and down.

My mechanic (theoretically retired but who takes the occasional job that nobody else around here will touch) is working on a Jaguar SS-100.  The RH (driver’s) side headlamp is “normal” – two wires.  What on earth is this contraption on the LH headlamp? He’s never seen a headlamp with a solenoid and these other bits. ( I once had a late-‘30s MG-SA and I don’t remember the headlamps having anything like this!)
