The mention of exhaust fumes reminds me of an experience that we
encountered when building AHX12 related to this subject.
When the car was first built we fitted an exhaust system that exited at the
rear but left it short such that it extended back barely beyond the flange
where the boot floor is riveted to the rear shroud much the way it was in
Jerry Coker's original drawings and on the original Earl's Court car.
Immediately we test drove the car, the cockpit was filled with exhaust
fumes to the degree that it made your eyes water.
After giving the subject due consideration, and trying a couple of other
things we extended the tailpipe to well beyond the rear bodywork and the
problem was solved immediately.
I always thought the length of the tailpipe looked a bit odd on Healeys but
it took this experience to teach me why!!
