[Healeys] Radiator Shovel, continued

I agree with Kees. The fan has to be mounted on the radiator core to overcome the pressure drop of the core.

I installed two 10" Hayden fans behind the cross bracing, pushing through the radiator core with foam seals to the core and blanking plates at the sides to direct all the air possible through the core. I deleted the mechanical fan on the water pump shaft and added an adjustable thermo-switch controlled by a tubular probe inserted below the radiator inlet. The thermo-switch is set to turn on at about 185 F and off at about 175 F. I have idled the car for long periods of time at ambient temperatures above 95 F without overheating. On the road to Deadwood across northern Colorado and the Nebraska panhandle with the ambient nearing 100 F the engine never got hot enough to turn the fans on.

I didn't realize how much room I would gain by leaving off the mechanical fan or I would probably have mounted the fans as pullers behind the radiator. That would have been simpler and probably even more effective.

If anyone is interested I'll try to get some pics.

This fan cannot work properly because it is to far away from the core and air escapes from the space between fan and core.

Patrick,
Here are a couple of shots of my car back in 2007 when I installed an electric fan to help with cooling. As you can see, it was quite easy as nothing was in the way! The fan didn't help though and I found another solution to that problem, but like I said, lots of room in there!
