To state the obvious, your carbs &/or throttle linkage are not adjusted correctly. First, your BN4 Has HD8 carbs, so you have at least a few non-standard modifications. The linkage as originally designed requires some "free play" in it. I would begin by disconnecting both carbs from the linkage & verify that the throttle shafts & "butterfly damper" will go completely & freely closed. Make sure the throttle shafts are not being held slightly open by one of the adjustment screws (some people call them "Idle screws") on the Carb. Verify that the valves & timing are correctly adjusted. Adjust the carbs individually while they are not connected to the linkage as described in the shop manual. HD8 carbs are notorious for being difficult to properly adjust. Some people adjust the idle as described in the manual & others swear that the idle circuit does not work correctly on (2) HD8's. You are on your own in determining what works for you. Make sure the overdrive lever on the throttle linkage near the firewall has the specified clearance as described in the shop manual.Good luck,Gary Hodson

Recently the the relay shaft nylon bracket broke (old age) replaced it with a new one. Relatively easy. Today went to start the car and revs go all the way to 4000 immediately and no playing with the accelerator pedal makes a difference. Looking in the engine compartment all linkage parts seem to be OK and functional. Any ideas? BN_4 with HD8 carbs_______________________________________________
