Ira

I am advised that the existing block was sonic tested and it is bored too large to create the ledge the sleeve requires to seat at the bottom. A closer to standard size block could easily be sleeved.

sleeving will put back material and should not do any harm to block. Plus standard piston and rings are easier to source :)

Thanks Bill. I’ll pass along your thoughts.

Question : will additional boring to install a sleeve weaken the block? I just don’t know enough about these things to know one way or the other as I’ve never had an engine rebuilt, let alone sleeved.

Thanks again.

If the block is original to the car and if the number plate is in place the best option would be to sleeve it. Don't allow it to be hot dipped or you will loose the number plate. Sleeving will probably be cheaper than buying an unknown block and then having to machine it to spec and it will restore the bores to the standard dimensions and extend the life of the block indefinitely.

Good luck to you friend's friend

Thanks Ira

I think he was trying to explore the non-sleeve option first before he went down that route. To be honest, I don’t know if one option is better than the other.

It should be able to be be sleeved by a competent machine shop if a block is not available.

his preference is a good used block. Anyone know where best to find one?

Thanks.
