Thanks for all the suggestions. 

 I ended up just pulling on the gen and tightening the adjusting bolt while lifting up on it.  Forgot it was that simple.  Seemed to work fine and probably what I've done before, but its been awhile since I last did it.  As far as tension, I just tensioned it roughly to what I've always done; agree not too loose but not too tight.
