Frank, I don't claim it's elegant or pretty, but attached is a photo of the
wrench I use and it works just fine.
I happened to see the original wrench in an antique store that had old
tools, and thought it was about the right size to use on the dog nut. I had
to file the jaws open a bit more to fit the nut, and now it measures about
1-3/4" (4.44 cm) (if the wrench ever had the original size stamped on it, it
is now illegible). I extended the handle for more leverage by cutting off
the other end of the wrench and welding on a piece of 1/8" thick steel. The
duct tape in the middle is to pad it where it hits the water pump. The jaws
measure 1/2" (1.3 cm) thick.

I'm just starting adjusting the valves on myBJ8 and can't seem to find a
wrench of the right size for the dog nut on the crankshaft. I have a large
crescent wrench but its too thick to get in there. Does anybody know the
correct size wrench to fit that nut?

If I remember. Right, It looks like the last time I adjusted the valves, I
used a large tapered drift to engage the dog ears on the nut, which seems to
work fine. Just curious what everyone else uses.

Thanks,
Frank
