in the mid 80s i chiseled off the old veneer, put new veneer on, then coated it with casting resin.  the dashboard pieces had 
to be level and it settled out nicely.  about 30 years later it had fine hairline crazing on the surface.  i used 600, then 2000 
sandpaper on it, then buffed it with polishing compound and a buffer.  looked like it had just been done.  worked for me.
