Agreed! I have a single DIN radio with a 7" retractable screen, and the
screen can be difficult to read in direct daylight.

To me one of the biggest considerations is the type of display the radio
has. It is very difficult to see most radio displays in the sun. Is there a
specific type of display that can easily be seen in the sun? John BJ8,AN5

Again, thanks to everyone who replied to the BJ8 oil pressure survey-
interesting variety of responses. My oil pressure figures fall well within
the acceptable figures, but what I'm wondering about is the time it takes
for the needle on the gauge to come up.
I haven't actually timed this, but mine seems to take an uncomfortable
length of time to come up on a cold start. Could this just be air in the
line delaying the response of the gauge- the pressure relief
valve...ideas?Whenever I change the oil filter it's full, so I don't think
it's the filter filling up. I understand that this is a vague question until
I've actually timed it, but I wondered if anyone else had had the same
concern.Thanks,
Stephen, BJ8

That depends what you want.
Do you want a period radio which would normally be AM only or do you
want FM as well? Mono or Stereo?
What kind of output do you want? Period radio's are about 5W. Later 90's
radio's pump out up to 25W modern radio's go way beyond that. A separate
amplifier can help out of course. Some early radio's have a DIN socket
that can be used as an input for your I-pod/phone. This was originally
intended for an accessory e.g. tape deck or gramophone etc. These are
usually the German radio's like Grundig, Blaupunkt, Schaub-Lorenz/ITT,
some Philips and Japanese radio's.
Post 1960 radio's are fully transistorized.
Let me know what you want and I can send some pictures. I have hundreds
of old radio's starting from the mid-thirties. Many are for sale. Mainly
German/Dutch/Japanese made. Some AM radios with 8-track player from
Radiomobile (UK) or Voxson (Italy).
You can source them locally at specialists or through ebay. Use Google
to find them. There are several suppliers of refurbished/restored
radio's in the UK and in Germany.
Shipping from Europe should be around $30 up to 2kg or $45 up to 5kg
insured up to $550.
Go for a speaker that fits properly in the space provided and is rated
at about twice the radio output. For a classic radio a 10-15W speaker is
fine. A very high rating may lead to a weak and distorted sound. Do not
expect super quality sound like from a modern radio.

Search for good prices. Moss also sells them. A search for Retrosound will
yield others selling vintage looking modern radios.

Nothing to do with the air in the line to the oil pressure gauge. Air in
the line is needed to even out vibrations of the needle due to the small
pressure pulses from the oil pump. It is not uncommon that pressure
build up is delayed. How and why this happens and why within the same
make and type of engine it occurs or not is often unclear.
On my car (Jensen Healey) I can have pressure from cold (or hot for that
matter) practically instantaneous or it can last up to half a minute or
more. Most JH's/Lotus 907 engines show this delay and it is the most
extreme in any engine I have encountered.
Always start the engine without revving it. Leave it idling and do not
drive away until you have oil pressure.
It does not seem to harm the engine as on my first JH I did over
160.000mls without any degradation of the oil pressure and/or bearings.

FWIW, my BN2 and BJ8 show oil pressure within 3 seconds of a cold start,
a little longer if I've just changed the oil. But, I usually have to
crank them for 5-10 seconds before they fire, and that should get the
pressure buildup started.

That is one from an Audenauer Mercedes a.o., including the complete
console with speaker. It already had FM. Rather bulky as it was a tubes
unit.

HelloStephen; ???A longtime ago, back on October 15 2001, Adnan Merchant
asked about a delay in oilpressure: ?If there is a delay, might it imply
that there is air in the line orsome other restriction somewhere???In
response, Michael Salter wrote: ??Hi Adnan,? There is a restrictor at the
block on the oil pressure line. If the line is full of air the pressure
takes some time to build on the gauge, particularly when cold, because
sufficient oil has to pass through the restrictor to compress the air in the
line to the indicated pressure.? If the line is bled at the gauge, to remove
all the air, the pressure reading should be almost instantaneous because, of
course, oil is not very compressible.??This may help you figure it
out.?--Scott Morris; Simcoe, Ontario, Canada???????? - Keep Smiling, Murphy
