[Healeys] Off comes the head...

Thanks, David, and I’ve taken your advice. I have everything prepped pull the head over the weekend and inspect the gasket, which is the old style copper.

As for the head, I will have the surface checked to make sure there is no warpage. But recognizing that the only pressurized oil in the head is the short run from the deck up to the rocker shaft, I’m thinking that this oil gallery is not close enough to a water gallery to be a problem short of a massive crack in the head.

It’s interesting that since I posted this on the list and the Healey Owners Facebook page, I’ve had maybe 6 people tell me they have the same symptoms. Eric Grunden also told me he’s seen this compromised block once in his career. So maybe not all that common, but not that rare either. I’ll let you know what I find when the head is off, but my money is on you selling me a block!

We have rebuilt 100’s of 6 cylinder Healey motors over the last 30+ years and have not run into this problem. Not to say that it happens. I have heard of it and there used to be a kit available to fix it. But the kit is no longer available.

My suggestion to Bruce was to look at the head gasket first since it is a much easier job to do first. As well as there is a oil galley thru the head and if there is a crack in the head that may also be an issue.

Hi

This is what happens when you restore an engine properly, e. g. you clean the stripped block thouroughly. Cast iron is quite pourous and the wall between the oil channel and water jacket is quite thin. When you clean the block you also wipe away any gunk that acts as sealant, so it starts to leak oil into the water. Usually you can get away with this problem by installing steel pipes in the oil channel that goes across the block and also the channel up to the top.

Finally diving in to diagnose and fix the oil in the coolant. Hoping it's just the head gasket, but since it started after the engine was done 11 years ago, I am suspicious that it's the oil gallery-water jacket wall between number 4 and 5 cylinders seeping high pressure oil into the coolant. Has anyone actually had or known anyone with this problem?
