[Healeys] oil gauge problem

the oil gauge needle started moving rapidly back and forth though it does move with acceleration and worked fine until now. also noticed small amount of oil on coiled cable that goes to guage but appears to be tightly connected. any thoughts on what is wrong and how to fix.
