[Healeys] FW: New guy after advice

I think Alex is the dealer who sells the most Healey’s in USA.

Most of the cars are in the very low price range like 15-25.000 USD, you have to understand at that price you don’t get much. I track some of the cars and many end up in Europe and are sold on from dealers there.

He does not give much information on the cars, actually you might call the description very poor, he does not give the VIN number in the adverts, but you can get it from them on mail. On the other hand he takes lots of pictures in much better quality that other sellers, so I believe he does not hide things. My advice is If you want to do business with him, you have to inspect yourself, but on the other hand with a Healey you always need to do that.

I live in Europe, and I was in the market for a Healey in 2009-2010 and looked at cars in USA. I didn’t want to go there and look, since I didn’t know what to look at, my knowledge of old cars is very limited and I don’t know what to look for on a Healey.

I hired an inspector to look at a specific car. It was almost waste of money, since he mostly took pictures of the car and filled in a simple report. I was advised not to buy a car from that alone, and I didn’t buy it because the seller did not explain much about the car.

I choose to wait until a local dealer in Denmark had a car. Before that I had talked to people on which dealers that were honest.

I went there and looked at it, I noted the VIN and searched for it.

I found it on the internet as being sold previously by a dealer in San Francisco, who had written a lot about it´s history. I was then convinced it was a good solid car and bought it.

It was sold in USA in 2010 for 38.000 USD. That is a middle range price and you have to expect some problems with the car. Mechanics are good, strong rebuilt engine, body ok, but you can see rust repairs in the rear inner fenders done with rivets. Bad dogleg are behind left front door. Repainted far from perfect. Chrome good. So decide what errors you can accept, you won’t find a perfect car at 40-50.000 USD.

Well as I said, I bought it and haven’t had any real problems so far. Even travelled to England, on to Holland and back to Denmark on a holiday, driving for 13 hours that day with 6 hours on the German Autobahn, from Holland to Denmark the last day.

I think patience is what you need.

Niels

Saw a 'Wheeler Dealers' episode where Mike bought a car--early MG or Triumph IIRC--from a guy named Alex. Pretty sure it was Alex Manos as they were filming in So Cal at the time. He appeared to have a fairly sizable inventory.

As far as Beverly Hills CC, I would stay away from them. They fo not have a great reputation on the Healey list. Is the car actually in LA? They broker cars from elsewhere in the country. I would check out national and State Hesley clubs for cars for sale
Www.healey6.com is great resource for info and links to many club websites. There are known problem areas on these cars and you must have someone familiar with them to look the car over. They are fun to drive and work on and most parts are easily obtained. This list is still a great resource, but you might also want to check out the Austin healey owners group on facebook.
Happy hunting.
