Just to add to the fun of this discussion, not all Oilite (brand name)
bushings are sintered bronze- they also make machined bushings.

A solid machined bushing would last a very short time in a generator.
The sintered bushing heats up when there isn't sufficient lubricant
and this releases a bit more oil from the matrix and it cools down
again whereas a solid one would just heat up and have no ability to
lubricate. Solid bushings are only for low speed applications like
kingpins and require criss-cross grooves to spread the lubricant.

According to Wikipedia:
Oilite was developed by Chrysler in 1930, originally for use in
bearings for water pumps and spring shackles, and without oil as the
porous filter element in gasoline filters.
Currently, the Oilite trademark belongs to Beemer Precision.
