Bob:  Talking strictly about your general transportation and not a specialty vehicle, one could take the advice of brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi, known also as "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers".  They had a radio talk show on PBS and newspaper articles on automobiles and automotive repair.  Their recommendation:  when the monthly cost of maintaining the vehicle exceeds the monthly payments for a new car, buy the new car.
