  Take a cheap 1/2" end wrench and grind down the box end--width and 'depth'--until you can just slip it over the nut.  It's tedious, but you can get the nuts loose enough that you can spin them off with your fingers so they can drop someplace inaccessible.

  I now have a BJ8 with HD8 carbs.  Any helpful hints on how to remove the air cleaners?  The only attachments are the two bolts through the carb flanges, which are not very accessible.  I can get at the outside ones ok, and one of the inside ones, sort of.
