[Healeys] Steering box cam

I need to change the cam on the end of a steering box shaft.
I've done this before using a 3 jaw puller with a couple of accessories but
it is a little brutal...
Has anyone developed a method for removing the cam (worm) from the bottom
of the steering shaft without the risk of damaging things irreparably?
