First problem is that if you are using the number 1 plug you will pick up the magnetic field from the ignition coil. Then you also need to get rid of the Steel core plug wires. For two reasons first they will cause problems with the timing light also they will also cause problems with the electronic ignition and will cause pre mature failure.

Try putting the pick up on the #6  plug wire.

Just a caution that if you are using of of the newer “digital” timing lights with this set up you are likely to have problems.
I have a new Pertronics distributor, flame thrower coil, and neg. earth on my 67 BJ8
I decided to buy a decent quality Innova 5568 modern digital timing light.
Phew - lots of problems and the light would not move as it was supposed to.
Eventually had to get complete set of new plug leads just to get it to sort of function.
Unit went back 3x and even today is a mystery if it will work or not.
It is ultra sensitive to noise and position of the magnetic pick up on plug #1
Moving it and inch can make the unit inoperable and erratic.
The manufacturer is also at a loss and not able to cure the problem for me .... grrr

Start the engine and let it idle until warm or drive a few miles to that purpose.
Set the idling speed at around 800-900rpm.
Set the dial to the required advance at idling with the vacuum line attached (see your workshop manual). Connect up to the battery and position the clamp on Nr.1 plug lead.
Loosen the distributor clamp.
Set the distributor to TDC on the marks.
Tighten the clamp, not to tight.
Recheck.
It is that simple.

WATCH OUT though for moving parts like the fan and water pump/dynamo pulleys/belts.

I have a timing light with the degree dial on the back,...............what are the next steps to set the timing correctly?? do I plug the vacuum, what degrees,do I have to start the engine??? etc.................................sorry for all the questions
