[Healeys] You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

G’day Graeme

That is really something that annoys me.

This car in Australia came up on eBay in January 2013 for $78,000. The
seller listed it as a 100M and if it was $78K it would have been cheap. I
wrote to the seller asking for certification that it was. Naturally I didn’t
receive any because it’s not a 100M. Yes it’s a BN2 that’s fitted with a few
Le Mans mods and by doing that he gained admission into the 100M “Le Mans”
Registry. In his ad he also has not included any photos of the engine.

I should say that gaining entry to the Registry is relatively simple. Any
100 that’s fitted with 1 ¾ SUs and leather bonnet strap can gain entry and
it doesn’t matter if it was so fitted in 1955 or 2014.

The going price of a fair dinkum 100M is close to $200K and that car is not
in that league. Anyone who wishes to have a looksee can do so at:

Looks like a nice car. Pity it has been stolen I hope he gets it back

But good luck with the insurance claim if not

There is currently a very tidy looking red over black 1955 BN2 (originally
left hand drive) now right hand drive converted by

The Healey Factory ( so it should be fairly good ) to !00M specifications
available for sale here in Melbourne

for A$66,000.00 which equates to around US $52,800.00 on the current
exchange rate.

Any one want a bargain 100M.? My mate decided not to buy it as it was too
nice a car as he is looking for reasonably tidy car

to do up and sell on eventually but if the going price is now !00K GBP
perhaps he had better rethink

Cheers

Graeme M

I have the car registered in The Austin Healey Club of America 100 Registry.
It is a BN1 with Le Mans conversion. Not sure when the conversion was done.

Last I saw the car listed was at Gullwing Motors (NY) in late 2011. It
apparently went to the UK after that.

Hi John,

There's more information on the car here: http://tinyurl.com/kskyb5h

According to the owner, the car was purchased by a U.S. soldier in Germany,
shipped to the U.S. in the 60s and went back to the UK in 2013.

Dear All

Having made just a quick check I cannot find any car in our database with
that UK registration number.

I have to presume that this means that the owner had not registered his car
with the Austin-Healey Club UK. As you said with a chassis number it would
help us all to keep an eye out for the car.

I get the feeling that the registration (marque) number 856 YUK would not
have been issued when the car was young. It was issued in Wolverhampton but
only counties or metropolitan areas' who had used up all the prefix letters,
would have used the reverse system of numbers before letters. YUK is a long
way from the first used of say xxx AUK so I would venture to guess that this
registration was issued in the early the 1960s but before the extra suffix
letter was added in 1962.

This could mean that the car came back from outside the UK; but this sort of
speculation is of no help without a chassis number.
