I hardily agree with the following. Not knowing what state the fuel pump on
any of my cars, I have dual pumps in all three, and naturally I needed the
second one on a trip home from a meet. A flip of a switch and I was back on
the road.

I rightly considered a pump the weakest link. When we looked at the one
that failed we discovered that it wasn't an SU at all, but some strange,
unrecognizable imitation.

Rich--try two redundant fuel pumps.  Install the second (I have a Facet
above the SU on my BN1), plumb in connecting tubes, duplicate the wiring
and set up some switches.  Fuel pump cuts out, throw switch and enjoy the
wine.
