Yes, after about 100-150,000 miles there will be indentations in the cups from
the needles. Google "Brinelling".
Many 'roller rockers' don't use needle bearings in the fulcrum and some don't
use them on the tips either, rather a single roller running on a hardened pin
which looks nice but probably is no real difference to the stock setup in
terms of friction.

I haven't dissected a (used) U-joint
in a while, if ever. Are there grooves around the
needle bearings?
