"An aluminum cylinder cannot be honed unless it has a steel insert or liner.
The aluminum
contains pores that could cut seals used on the primary and secondary
pistons. The pores of
an unlined aluminum cylinder are closed at time of manufacture by a rolling
process. This rolled
finish would be removed by honing, and the piston seals would wear
prematurely. Only a cast-
iron cylinder bore or steel insert can be honed satisfactorily."
