thanks to all. I got it now. I did take the pins out, but failed to notice that the dimple in the rail forming a hard stop was only on one end. I was pushing the inner rail out from the wrong end.

So to dismantle the seat tracks for plating, one has to just use force to spread the outer track enough for some balls to fall out? Is there a tech tip already existing for me?
