[Healeys] Rear main seal

Yes, that's it Steve.
Remove the flywheel and the backplate. Remove the seal holder, replace the
seal.
Make a brown paper gasket (grocery bag?) to seal the backplate to the block
or you will have an oil leak from the back of the camshaft bearing.

Assembly is the reverse of the strip down.
Enjoy.

O.K., I was mistaken. The new seal I have IS split. The spring was holding
it together so tightly that the split line was not visible, but when I
removed the spring I could see the split. On closer inspection, the seal
retainer now installed in the block is in two pieces. It was difficult to
see that without scrunching myself into a contorted position and getting my
head into the hole in the firewall.
So, all I have to do now is to remove the engine backplate, yes? There
doesn't seem to be enough clearance to get the pieces of the retainer out
without removing the backplate, or room to install the new seal and spring,
either, for that matter.

Thanks,
Steve Byers

A solid round seal would not fit on the rear of the Healey engine. We have
been installing the split seal on all our engines since 1990 and have had
very good luck with all of them. We will not do a clutch, transmission or
engine rebuild with out installing a rear seal.

There were some earlier seal set ups that we did where we installed a Chevy
seal and modified the rear of the block to accept it.
