[Healeys] black smoke

You'd be lucky to get much under 800 with advanced timing and bypassing the
screws with leaks or ill-adjusted throttle plates. Leaks will keep the speed
up.

What happens when you close the slow idle screws? half turn is really not
much. Air is getting there somewhere.
