My guess from what we do with lug nuts today on wheels more standard for vintage racing is that the centers were machined off so the mechanic could see at a glance whether the hub nut was tightened or not by looking at the depth of the hub. .G Gary Anderson Editor-at-large, Austin-Healey Magazine
