[Healeys] Overdrive problem

Remember, if pressure is used as a diagnosis tool, then pressure must be
measured with the unit in both on and off modes to determine if there is a
pressure drop. Next is to determine where it is.. The other thing with
pressure is that there is a "factory" rating and then there is what the unit
will still operate at rating. These are generally very different numbers.
Those, with soft accumulator springs (read Healey) will still engage at
around 100psi.. just saying

If you want to measure the pressure your overdrive is making (low/loss of
pressure a likely cause of your problem), I can provide the needed oil
pressure
gauge and associated connection fitings:

Hi Neil,
Based upon my experience i would think that the oil
type is not likely to
be the real problem.
You should check that the operating
valve is opening all the way as per the
workshop manual as that is very easy
and can cause problems but again not
the most likely cause.
My bet would be
that the pressure accumulator bore and piston are badly
scored and allowing
oil to pass. This can, with considerable effort be
corrected without removing
the gearbox.
Wear and damage on other parts can contribute to the leakage but
most of
those, like the operating pistons require removal of the unit for
repair.
