Hey Mark,
Threaten the new modem, whilst  waving the biggest Whitworth spanner you have,
yelling the most disgusting profanities you know.
E.g.
"your step mother was a gorgeous young 1984 model 300/1275 baud French
teletext modem, and you, you, you silly little boy can't even connect to the
interwebz  ... "
Then it knows you're really, really serious....
