[Healeys] Rear Axle issues

There is was to look at this. The most common cause is the shims
between the pinion bearings go bad causing some movement in the
pinion bearings.

The only correct way to fix this is to remove the third member and
replace the damaged shims and adjust the preload on the pinion
bearing. Then you can install a new seal.

The other option is to simply remove the drive flange while in the
car. You can then replace the seal re install the flange and you are
done. The problem with doing this is if the adjusting shims are bad
and you re torque the pinion to the original specs. You will have
changed the pre load on the pinion bearings and they may go bad.

Either way be sure and clean up a sealing surface on the pinion
flange with some fine emery prior to installing the flange. If there
is a bad wear spot on the flange you also can install a redisleeve
which will put a fresh sealing surface on the flange for the seal to
run on.
