Al, you can get by with 16 ft. (flat front - not V shaped) but limits other
cargo inside. When I bought mine it was strongly suggested by the deal to go
20 ft because of the much higher resale. An american car will not fit in 16
ft. Extra 4 foot gives room for work bench / storage and you do not notice
the difference on the road.

20 foot costs only slightly more than 16 or 18 foot because the smaller
sizes are less available. I went with floor joists at 16" (vs 24")  @ $182
and 10,000 lbs axles (instead of 7200lbs. ) for an additional $150 - $200.
Glad I did, it pulls really well and true. Make sure you add a good
anti-sway set-up.
