A VIN is just a way to distinguish one car from another, and to allow it to
have a "history". Anytime someone is reluctant to reveal the VIN (or engine
number) of a car they have for sale, I wonder what it is they are afraid of.
Obviously, all modern cars have the VIN plainly visible in the windshield
(because it is no longer possible to use the VIN to identify the owner).
New York-registered cars even have the VIN of Healeys posted in the
windshield.
Of course, for a registry the VIN is critical to being able to account for a
car. Actually, a registry is probably the best protection against buying a
car with a shady past or getting involved with a scammer. Withholding the
VIN is not going to stop the scammers. I've seen plenty scams on eBay where
the scammer just copied the photos from another sale and posted them without
the VIN.

Gergo, with all the scams going around these days I can understand why a
seller might feel that way. If you're serious about the car, maybe a Long
Island lister could check it out for you. The price is half of what Gullwing
would charge and it has a bit of an un-cobbled look to it.
