To get the block to go between the engine rails the back plate would
definitely have to be removed as well. Probably possible if the gearbox can
be removed, but you would need to have the car on a hoist or very high
stands so that you can pull the engine out from under the car once it has
been dropped to the floor, and the lifting point which is supporting the
engine would have to be moveable to allow one to move the load rearward once
the gearbox, back plate and engine mounts had been removed, and then
lowered.
This all done and the necessary repairs being completed the whole thing has
to be reinstalled, "assembly is the reversal of disassembly".
Although removal is without disassembling the body is probably possible I'm
inclined to think that Partick's body disassembly plan is going to be the
best option.
