It was not only the knock offs that became illegal in the 50's or 60's 
in many European countries. All unnecessary protruding parts had to be 
removed from the cars, e.g. bonnet mascots (these were absolute killers 
to pedestrians), protruding ornaments on front bumpers, eye lashes for 
head lights etc.
