At idle in neutral with a stable RPM, push the clutch pedal in.  If RPM drops, that indicates the drag from the throwout 
bearing and thrust washers against the crankshaft is greater than the resistance of the input shaft.

That has been the case with every manual transmission car--without ECM--that I've owned.  Of course, there's another 
reason to start with the clutch disengaged.
