[Healeys] Two hot too shart?

Don't early 6-cyl cars have the fuel pump located directly over the exhaust?  This can cause vapor lock symptoms like 
you describe.  I think that's why the fuel pump was relocated to the non-exhaust side in BJ8s.  Maybe some heat 
shielding around the pump and/or fuel lines.

Anyway, sounds like classic vapor lock.
