For the record, the thread on the axel nut is opposite that of the spinner.

Correct the LH nut is a LH thread but note these are octagonal nuts, 8 sides
so a regular socket will not work. That is why so many are so badly
battered!!!

fact, I've damaged the but a little trying and I'm worried about rounding
the nut and being really screwed.



I don't understand why it would be so tight or difficult to take off.
