Are we talking about real backfiring -- the sound of a gun shot? -- or are
we just talking about some sort of blub-blub-blub sounds when you let off on
the gas. If the former, I'll leave it to the experts to sort out. If the
latter, wouldn't worry about it -- it's often caused by simply running a
little rich, and has been considered such a desirable "old sports car sound"
that
(I kid you not) BMW programmed it into the sound of the Mini Cooper S's
until they got so many customers coming in complaining that their cars were
"back-firing" that they changed the ignition program to make it go away.
