In fact, early Merlin engines came equipped with SU carburettors which,
shock horror, did not work in negative G maneuvers which BF 109 pilots used
to their advantage during the Battle of Britain, despite the fact that
Hawker Hurricanes and Spitfire 1s were slightly better aircraft than the
109Es.

It was a huge deal and evenutally they had to fix the whole carb setup, and
eventually went to direct fuel injection because SU's just weren't up to the
challenge.
