You are right about the power plugs. They were also used on Land Rovers. 
They
were used to power a trouble lamp and maybe for other accessories.
The Sunbeam sports model was the Alpine from about 1953 I think. Sunbeam and
Talbot were both acquired by the Rootes Group and the whole Sunbeam line was
badged as Sunbeam-Talbot at the time.
