whenever my bj8 starts to exhibit the same symtoms i immedietely change the fuel filter. backfiring almost always comes from a lean mixture.  my healey would run fine in the stall and going down the hill, but would start backfiring and stuttering when i  was pulling the hill and had the throttle open.  i did not see where you had checked the filter, so it might rate a check.   hjim
