Actually, to be fair,  you should almost never smell gas, even in a
British car.

If you do, there's a leak at a junction somewhere, the carbs are
overflowing, or the tank is leaking.  All fixable.

Pre 60's LBCs you'll smell gas when filling up... due to tank vent pipes.
